Patti Mollema enjoys painting outdoors (en plein air) and especially watches for the play of light and shadow as the focus of her paintings. As a child and with the encouragement of her grandmother, Patti enjoyed watching colors in Michigan landscapes and waterscapes altered by sunlight, shadows, clouds, seasonal changes, and climate extremes.

Now years later when she sees that play of light and shadow, she wants to hold that moment a bit longer by translating what she sees into the colors of oil paint.

“In recent years and after a full career of teaching, I began studying the Colorist approach to painting that traces back to the Cape Cod School and the students of Henry Hensche who learned to see and use colors in a new way. I paint indoors and outdoors.

Painting outdoors, “en plein air,” is like a fast-moving sport of fitting light and shadow puzzle pieces together before the shifts and shadows change. For me, a big part of this learning is to identify colors as I see them in any given light, then mix and use paint quickly in changeable Michigan weather.”

Her work has been included in the new Plein Air Magazine summer 2011 digital issue. She paints with the Plein Air Artists of West Michigan and Six Women Painters. Patti is represented seasonally by Good Goods in Saugatuck and Treeline Gallery in Suttons Bay.
